We’ve gave some questions to bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL, and in an act of reciprocity they have given us some answers. In this installment, we hear from Auckland band ‘Miss June’! HUP: Tell us about Miss June! Miss June: Miss June was formed in Auckland by Annabel Liddell (Guitar, Vox), when Tom Leggett (Drums, Backing Vox), Chris Marshall (Bass, loud noises) and Jun Park (Guitar, the image of the band) met up for a jam to help Annabel out for her solo show at Bloodfest. Originally Annabel asked only Tom and Chris to join. However, during the jam they felt they lacked beauty and a graceful front figure. Disappointed, they almost cancelled the show until Jun walked into the room; they then begged him to join due to his handsome looks. HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? Miss June: Our sound is if Bikini Kill and the Pixies had an illegal love child. Or Anger with a kiss of sadness. HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? Miss June: Our favourite song to play live is Twitch. Which is our next single to be released! HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to…(playing or not playing)
Miss June: One of Jun’s most memorable gig was seeing Miss June live with Michael Howell on guitar at the BFM summer series. HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? Miss June: We are looking forward to watching The Datsuns and The Beths. Both amazing live bands that represent the NZ music scene proudly. HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! Miss June: Our best memory of Hamilton is when we were on tour with our Australian friends Hideous Sun Demon and stopped in at Hamilton on the way back from Wellington to eat. We ended up eating at this Kebab joint that looked like a real-life spam/virus/ad. It was a brightly lit store with blue lights everywhere and they had the worst kebab and fries we had ever eaten. They literally microwaved the “meat” and then would chuck it in a dirty wrap with cheese and would then proceed to microwave it again! The middle was still cold and the meat was off. We were all already sick and eating that just pushed us over the edge. However, they did let us choose our own music and charge our phones. 5/7 would go again when drunk.

We threw some questions at the bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. In this episode we look at the answers pigeoned back by Bloodlux!
HUP: Tell us about Bloodlux! Bloodlux: Hello we're called Bloodlux. Bloodlux is Chloe, Nathan, Wai and Alex. We're all from the Hamilton/Waikato area and we want to make nice melodic music with a little twist. We hope you like it! HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? Bloodlux: Like Fiona Apple attacking Metric with a granite boulder. HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? Bloodlux: 'In the Ground Tonight' just came together really well when we played it together first, and it really showcases a lot of our individual sounds and Chloe's vocals. HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to…(playing or not playing). Bloodlux’ Alex: Napalm Death at the Kings Arms in 2015 was incredible. Their energy is amazing, and it just gets to you. Music should make you feel like that, no matter what genre it is. Bloodlux’ Wai: Definitely Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds back in January 2017. The whole band was electric and Nick stage presence was massive. Highlight had to be him furiously shouting and pointing at me during a chorus of Mercy Seat! HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? Bloodlux: We haven't listened to everyone yet, but The Beths are on our shortlist for sure. They will be lots of fun. Like milk to kittens, we have been feeding questions to bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. This time around, we hear back from Rubita! HUP: Tell us about Rubita! Rubita: The Rubita Band consist of Luke Kibblewhite (saxophone), Seth Clement (drums), Hon Man (bass guitar) and Rubita (a.k.a., Rachel Kibblewhite; guitar and vocals). The Rubita Band is the project of Rachel Kibblewhite, and started when she returned from her studies in Dunedin. Since being in multiple bands while in Dunedin, she decided to create her own band with cousin Luke, university friend Seth and Auckland music school student Hon. The Rubita Band is currently based in Auckland and Hamilton. HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? Rubita: If a Toucan on steroids flew into a bar and ordered a multi coloured cocktail - it would be called a Rubita. HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? Rubita: Told Ya So. HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to… (playing or not playing)
Rubita: Playing on a stage near the beach in a mud bath with people doing mud booms around you. HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? Rubita: Can't wait to see System Corporation and The Datsuns! HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! Rubita: Rubita Band is very much born and breed in The Tron :)
We’ve been getting inside the heads of a few of the bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. In this round we talk to a The Scones offshoot band with another culinary inspired name, ‘Kitchenette’!
HUP: Tell us about Kitchenette! Kitchenette: We are Greg (guitar, vocals) and Julian (vocals, melodica, glockenspiel, Casiotone, squeezebox, bodhran). Late last year we were asked to play a brief acoustic set, which we cobbled together. The rest is history. HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? Kitchenette: Lo-fi pop with harmonies. HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? Kitchenette: This will be our second gig. Most of our songs are originals/Scones songs, but I think the most enjoyable one on the night might be Boot Your Car, a cover of an Electric Blood song. HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to… (playing or not playing) Kitchenette: Calamari Bushmen, Empire Hotel, Dunedin 1990 (approx.) HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! Kitchenette: There are over 1000 PhD-qualified scientists living and working in Hamilton. We’ve been asking probing questions of the bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. This time around we extract some information from System Corporation! HUP: Tell us about System Corporation! System Corporation: System Corporation started out when Phil Somervell (The Datsuns) and Scott Newth (Rumpus Room) were discussing some demos that they each had, that were not suitable for their respective bands. So we decided, with Ben Cole (The Datsuns), to start a new collaborative act to see what could become of the demos. It grew from there. Our members are: Phil Somervell (Thames; Guitar), Alan Deare (Hamilton; Bass), Kent Newth (Waitetuna; Guitar), Ben Cole (Wellington; Drums), Andrew Newth (Frankton; Guitar) and Scott Newth (Tamahere, Vocals). HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? System Corporation: This is a difficult question. We get asked it often, but still cannot answer it. We are not any musical style. You just have to listen for yourself. HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? System Corporation: This is our first show, so come and ask us after we play. I'm sure you'll get six different answers. HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to… (playing or not playing)
System Corporation: This is a tricky question for 6 people who never see each other to answer without a series of emails, text messages, phone calls and personal visits. HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? System Corporation: The Datsuns. For a multitude of reasons. Mostly because of logistical reasons, we arrive at the festival in time to play and the only other band we will get to see (or be playing in) is The Datsuns. Sorry other bands that we missed you. HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! System Corporation: When all six of us playing in this version of System Corporation get to Hamilton for Future City, it will be the first time that all 6 of us have met each other in person.
How to you fix a Tuba? With a tuba glue! We’ve been questioning the bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. In today’s instalment, Auckland 3-piece ‘Repairs’!
HUP: Tell us about Repairs! Marty: There’s three of us in Repairs - Nic plays bass, I play guitar and James plays drums. At the moment I do most of the singing but I’m slowly convincing the other two to do more! We’re based in Auckland, although James lives right at the border of Auckland and Waikato, so regular practices in the city centre require a great amount of dedication on his part. We started playing music together almost a year ago. We were initially jamming as a way for a bunch of band orphans to still get their music fix after all our previous bands went on hiatus. It started out with me (after ‘god bows to math’ finished up for a while), Paul (from ‘Trust Punks’), James and Sam (who were both playing in ‘Lost Rockets’). Paul had other projects starting up so we convinced Nic to join us (her first time playing bass/in a band!). Sam now plays in an awesome band called ‘Swallow the Rat’ (we played our first shows together late last year) and we decided to call ourselves ‘Repairs’. HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? James: Well if Repairs were a cake, here is the recipe... Ingredients: 1 cup of Fugazi, 150 grams of Shellac, 2× teaspoons Breeders and a dash of Mclusky, 1× guitar, 1× bass and 1× drums. Method: in a small dark room add drums, guitar and bass. Start stirring and slowly add in all ingredients and fan bake at 250 degrees. Serve hot. HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? Nic: Hmmmm. I reckon Marty and James would say ‘Wedding Horse’... For me, ‘Drones’ is one of the most fun to play – and usually when I start to relax in the set. ;-)
HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to… (playing or not playing)
Nic: Seeing Sleater-Kinney at the Powerstation (2016) was a real “OH MY FRICKING GOD” moment for me. They were so inspirational and empowering to watch. I don’t doubt for a moment that if teenage me had seen them I would’ve absolutely left the gig, picked up an instrument and thought anything was possible. Actually, adult me left the gig, picked up an instrument, and thinks most things are possible. Also, Mogwai performing ‘Batcat’ is still one of the most magnificent things I’ve ever witnessed or heard. HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? Marty: The Beths!!!! Saw them with Die! Die! Die! last year and they were incredible. Their EP rules so much. We’re going to aim to finish up and run over to Nivara to catch their set. There’s so many sweet bands on this line up though! HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! James: Hamilton city is the only city in New Zealand that does commercial hot air balloon rides! See Also We’ve been quizzing the bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. This time around we have a chat over the proverbial teacups to Loudhailer! HUP: Tell us about your Loudhailer! Loudhailer: We are James Jobe (Songwriter, Singer, Guitarist), Hugh Potter (Bass, Backing Vocals), and Nick Pouwels-Strang (Drums, Backing Vocals). We all actually met in the halls at university in Wellington, where James and Hugh jammed on and off disturbing the book worms above. James moved home to Matamata and Hugh was back in Hamilton, so they jammed again. Nick was brought in to fill the drumming position and the band was formed roughly a year ago. The main reason we started out as a band was as a creative outlet for three guys who just work all day, so it’s fun to play live and rehearse music. HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? Loudhailer: We’ve been told we sound a bit like Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys all having a spa bath with Robert Smith way up in the Southern Alps with a glass of deep Merlot in hand and it’s just tickling the tastebuds while not overpowering the lamb roast Anthony Bourdain and Josh Homme have prepared earlier. And that was just from a dude on an acid trip at our second gig who kept shouting “LOUDSPEAKER!” at us all night. If you can’t trust him who can you trust? HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? Loudhailer: At the moment that would be a toss-up between “Japan” and “Asleep on the Tracks”, but “Deranged” seems to really get us up at the moment so probably that one. HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to… (playing or not playing)
Loudhailer: As a band bonding experience we all went to see Wolfmother live at the Powerstation, which included us rather pushing our physical capabilities in the mosh-pit, but it was worth it. HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? Loudhailer: Really want to see all the great bands we haven’t yet had a chance to see live yet, but you can’t pass up seeing The Datsuns, can you?! HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! Loudhailer: In 2016, Hamilton received a record-setting 16 Tony nominations, winning 11, including Best Musical, and was also the recipient of the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. You did mean the musical, right?! Hear more of Loudhailer on Soundcloud.
I’ve got a Polish mate who's a roadie for a rock band. I've also got a Czech one too. We’ve been asking a series of not so embarrassing, pun lacking questions of the bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. This time around we talk to Auckland’s Dad Jokes!
HUP: Tell us about Dad Jokes! Dad Jokes: Ian plays guitar, and Matt plays drums. We both sing but Ian tries to do it more than Matt. We've been around since 2014 and are based in Auckland. HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? Dad Jokes: The best we've heard is Weezer on coke. HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? Dad Jokes: We've got a bunch of new stuff that we've just finished writing so we're pretty excited to play those live. Out of the old stuff, it would probably be JCVD.
HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to…(playing or not playing)
Dad Jokes: We got free tickets to see Kiss a few years ago so we took a bunch of mushrooms and it was the craziest time. HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? Dad Jokes: Datsuns. HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! Dad Jokes: Watching Rhett, the drummer from Contenders, drink two litres of chocolate milk during a set at Biddy Mulligans. See More: Dad Jokes on Facebook Dad Jokes on Bandcamp We’ve been grilling the bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. In this episode we talk to Glass Shards! HUP: Tell us about Glass Shards! GS: Glass Shards is a one-man band lead by local art fiend Oliver Stewart. The backbone of the Glass Shards sound is Ableton (a production suite played from a computer). The project began back in 2010 after I moved to Hamilton to study Screen and Media at the University of Waikato. The origin is kinda boring really. I was producing quite a few tracks from my student dorm and had to figure out a name to chuck them under and voila! Glass Shards was born! HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? GS: Imagine, if you can, the sound of a audio sampler being tossed around a concrete mixer with the sultry vocal tones of Alan Vega and the rhythmic backing of a dozen white dudes trying to dance on bubble wrap. Mix all that together and you'd have something god-awful. Jeez, I'd HOPE Glass Shards sounds nothing like that. HUP: What is our favourite song to play live? GS: Ooh, at the moment that would have to be a cover of Essa Morris's song "Giving Up". HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to… (playing or not playing)
GS: That would have been Dillinger Escape Plan when they played at the Kings Arms a couple years back. The energy and intensity that those guys bought to the stage really blew my mind. HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? GS: Myself, of course. I'm going to set up a wall of mirrors between me and what I'm sure will be an ENORMOUS crowd and just perform naked, eyes dead-locked on my own. Its sure to be a sensual, exhilarating show. Real talk though, I'm crazy excited to see BloodLux after hearing snippets of their songs throughout last year. System Corporation have been steadily growing traction too and I really like what little they've put out so far. HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! GS: Did you know, that buried deep underneath this great cities foundations lies another city filled with frog people. This ancient species of ambivalent, amphibious folk has been watching us and our puny civilisation grow, just waiting for the day to reveal themselves. When that day comes, I will welcome our slimy overlords with open arms. Remember, you heard it here first guys. Glass Shards on Soundcloud We’ve been quizzing the bands playing at this year's FUTURE CITY FESTIVAL. In this installment we talk to a band who doesn’t see themselves as a band, but instead as “a way of making music in the 21st Century”; DateMonthYear! HUP: Tell us about DateMonthYear! DateMonthYear: DateMonthYear is proudly based in Hamilton, and a proudly independent music experience featuring Emma Koretz (vocals), Brooke Baker (vocals, guitar, keys), Tyler Leet (guitar), Hayley Schwass (bass) and Trevor Faville (percussion). HUP: How would you describe your band to someone that hasn’t heard you before? DateMonthYear: Cinematic, female-fronted indie rock HUP: What is your favourite song to play live? DateMonthYear: That's a tough one, but Favilles' current fave is called Icarus. HUP: Tell us about the best gig you’ve ever been to… (playing or not playing)
DateMonthYear: Well... the next one! HUP: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Future City 2018? DateMonthYear: Cheshire Grimm and the Datsuns and Glass Shards. HUP: Give us your best Hamilton fact or story! DateMonthYear: 'Mystery Creek' (the venue for the Fieldays) gets its name from an unsolved murder in the 1890s; the venue is based now where they found the body! Visit DateMonthYear on Facebook: |
