Conway - Ancient Tapes - Phantasy Gang

The Meteor
Feb 14 2015

A romantic Valentines' night at the Meteor checking out some Hamiltonians do their thing? 'Why ever not!' seemed to be a common thought that night, as well over 100 people dropped into the luscious space that is The Meteor to be entertained by a rejuvenated Conway and guests.
First on the bill were Phantasy Gang, featuring Stenn Francis-Deare on vocals and keys. PG's lush folksy sounds found very appreciative ears in front of them, their 30 minute set a delicious entree for the evenings events. The main course followed, seeing Conway return to the stage after a very long time of not playing at all. Sean Lynch - Conway's main man - was ably supported by his band Nick Johnston on keys, Stan Jagger on guitar and Peter Caldwell on drums. There is real craftsmanship in Conway's songs; it is music that moves you physically and emotionally, a gentle sway of feeling that grips. The highlight is the stunning 'Burst' whereby the slow build, so full of promise and beauty, finally unleashes itself onto the crowd gushing over them like a well of tears. Someone close by claims it is the musical equivalent of giving birth, and I am in no position to argue. Check it out for yourself...

After 80 minutes and 14 songs Conway leave the stage, a good night's work behind them. Following the headline act comes relative newcomers Ancient Tapes. With their shoegaze inspired pop songs, you feel you have heard bands like this before, and you liked them. Singer Sam Brockelsby blats away on his guitar, Mark McGeady smashes the bejesus out of his kit, Rob Shirlow basses his bass and Gareth Schott lays all sorts of noise and beauty over the top, producing noisy rhythmic droning pop that has people up and on their feet dancing erratically.

All three songs from their recent Hummingbird EP get an outing and go down well. A comical encore call is met with a cover of 90's shoegaze legends Ride's 'Drive Blind' and the evening is done. A top night at a top venue with some top sounds. More please, Hamilton. RS
